Wes Hunt's Monday column is, perhaps, the worst opinion piece that I've seen in the Alligator in the last five years.
A simple check of the admissions office or a look at the idea of "correlation" would invalidate almost all of the ideas here, such as the "fact" that anyone with a check can get into the university. Talking about an infinitely large university accepting any incoming student is an infantile way of getting a rhetorical point across.
Mr. Hunt states that college does not make someone smarter or more capable. My suggestion to Mr. Hunt is to expand his sample population beyond the bathrooms of bars and into the real world, where you see (gasp!) diplomas on the walls of those with the hardest jobs - doctors, engineers and lawyers. It doesn't take a stretch to say that they have all learned things in practice that are almost impossible to teach straight out of textbooks.
