Every time I read the letters to the editor section of your paper, I'm forced to allow Student Government more time in my mind than it deserves. Someone even got closer to the point Friday by mentioning the frivolous spending of money by not only SG but governments in general.
In terms of our actual government, I feel as though some structure is required. We can always criticize, but we can never do away with it completely. Regarding SG, I feel as though UF provides both access to possibilities and structure. Our SG is beyond unnecessary - it's damaging. It creates factions and consumes both time and money that could be better spent.
If students feel strongly enough about an issue, they will act on it. If students' rights are in danger, they should either fight for their rights or be trampled.
Do away with the entire SG, forget the factions, and let that money be spent by people who are both more capable and more unbiased. Don't give millions of dollars and some responsibility to a group of students who wasted money and let them waste even more.
