Enduring an economic crisis does not justify devolving into a reprehensible, socially irrelevant miscreant, which is exactly the transformation people undergo when they decide to make ends meet by scamming and robbing the elderly.

Twice in the past week in Gainesville, the scams have relieved the victims of about $11,000 total.

Seriously, who the hell does this?

Did a super-clever guild of villains assemble to devise the most heinous crime imaginable? We doubt it. The Joker and the Riddler never messed with Batman's older-than-dirt butler Alfred, and all they ever did was scheme for money.

We refuse to refer to these sub-humans as "scam artists" because there's nothing creative about what they did.

Targeting the elderly is as deplorable as stealing from a church's collection plate.

The Editorial Board cannot imagine the perpetrators' thoughts leading up to their crimes.

Who would actually go to the lengths to impersonate a police officer - fake badge and all - tell an old woman her bank account was screwed and still have the balls to walk her to the bank to withdraw her money? The thought is sickening.

We know we made a comment earlier in the week that likened the elderly to a certain breed of dog, but that doesn't mean we don't respect them.

If you can even attempt to level with these criminals, try to envision your grandparents being taken in by this kind of scam. If your empathy doesn't immediately turn to potential rage, you should get your head checked.
