City Commission holds discussion on amendment to antidiscrimination policy

The early discussion time of a proposed charter amendment at today's city commission meeting has drawn complaints from some Gainesville residents.

The amendment will be discussed during the first hour of the 1 p.m. meeting. If placed on the ballot and passed by voters, it would revoke parts of the city's antidiscrimination policy that protect sexual orientation and gender identity.

Cain Davis, chairman of Citizens for Good Public Policy, the group that proposed the amendment, said he was concerned that many residents would not be able to attend an afternoon discussion.

"They are basically going to exclude a large percentage of the public," said Davis, who will still be at the meeting.

Kurt Lannon, clerk of the commission, said the city has received other complaint e-mails but that the commission would not make a decision today about whether the amendment would go on the March 2009 ballot. Instead, he said, they could make plans to vote on the issue at a later evening session.
