In Wednesday's paper, Rafael Sabbagh suggested that America should exercise a "humbler" policy regarding Russia's invasion of the sovereign republic of Georgia.

Given our current involvement in the Middle East, I must reluctantly agree with him.

Russia specifically chose this moment to invade one of its former republics because America is firmly committed in the Middle East and unable to lend significant military assistance to one of our allies.

A diplomatic policy of humility will not work for long. Russia sees humility for what it really is - weakness.

When confronted by strength, Russia would fold like the schoolyard bully it is. That was the primary lesson learned from the Cold War.

I hope America's leaders realize this and refuse to kowtow to the warmongers in Moscow.
