I was just perusing on ESPN.com through their list of most important stadiums in history by Jim Caple. Note that this list is not "best" stadiums or "prettiest" or the writer's favorite stadiums. Most important means how it was influential to the sports world.
Anyway, Ben Hill Griffin Stadium clocked in at No. 77 in the list because it is home to the origin of both Gatorade and the Gatorade Bath.
Other notable stadiums in the rankings:
No. 1: Yankee Stadium (Is anyone else tired of ESPN talking about Yankee Stadium? I'm actually glad the last game is over so we don't have to watch those commercials anymore.)
No. 9: The Rose Bowl
No. 18: Notre Dame Stadium
No. 26: NCAA headquarters
Tie for No. 27: Ohio State and Michigan's stadiums (really? That high?)
No. 51: Rosenblatt Stadium (home to the College World Series)
No. 58: Cameron Indoor Stadium (Duke basketball)
No. 61: Joe Louis Arena (home to my beloved Detroit Red Wings)
No. 65: Raymond James Stadium (Tampa Bay Bucs)
No. 80 Thompson-Boling Arena (Tennessee basketball)
No. 96 Neyland Stadium (home to Tennessee football, and this weekend's thrasing by UF)
That about does it. Check out the article if you want more detailed reasons for each choice.
