Frank Bracco sat for about four hours in a cushy blue chair Tuesday in the Reitz Union's Center for Student Activities and Involvement in quiet protest.
Bracco, a political science senior, spent the afternoon waiting for a written explanation as to why the party name he filed for Student Government elections, Swamp, was rejected.
"It's an appealing name," he said. "I just want to see the paperwork."
He was told he could not have the name because Keith Hardwick, a former Swamp Party president, has first dibs.
Bracco said he registered Aug. 26 under the Swamp Party, but the name was given to Hardwick, who said he registered his version of the party Aug. 29.
For the past six elections, the name Swamp has been given to Hardwick. He has the right to keep the name as long as he registers the party before deadline.
Hardwick declined comment.
A similar debacle occurred last year, when Sam Miorelli, a UF engineering senior with no previous involvement in the Swamp Party, registered under the Swamp name for fall elections. Hardwick filed a complaint, and the SG Elections Commission ruled that Hardwick could keep the name because he registered it in the previous spring's SG election.
