Saturday night's football game was everything we thought it could be. Although we have our worries about the correlation between media hype and the Gators' actual potential, the Editorial Board was thoroughly satisfied with the team's victory over Miami.

The only downside is that it seems our fans are living up to the trite T-shirt message, "We're a drinking town with a football problem."

Hey, we're all for winning. We like showboating a little bit, too. Hell, if Tebow wants to take three consecutive delay-of-game penalties to show the crowd his best Soulja Boy rendition, we've got his back. What really pissed us off Saturday was the complete lack of class that some of our fans showed.

We like to believe that it's pretty difficult to offend us. We receive dozens of letters a week telling us how wrong and stupid we are. In one case, one of our writers was linked to Hezbollah and Hamas because of his column. We let it slide because it comes with the territory, and we're just grateful that people care enough to let us know how they feel.

But to care so much about a football game as to heave racial slurs at the opposing team's fans shows an embarrassing lack of class. Just because an overzealous UM fan drives by a flock of UF students screaming, "This is Canes-ville" doesn't make it appropriate to tell him to go back to whichever-Latin-American-country-you-think-of-first.

Many of the students at UF and UM are from Florida, so this kind of response is hypocritical and revolting. Next time the Gators are beating a team down, just point to the scoreboard with your mouth shut.
