The application process to join next summer's Preview staff will be a little more of a battle than in recent years.
Ann H. Becks, director of UF's New Student Programs, said about 140 students have applied to join Preview, which serves as an orientation program for UF freshmen and transfer students.
In a typical year, about 115 students apply, she said. Preview staff members are paid about $2,200 for working the entire summer, according to the application.
Although the number of students applying has increased, only about 40 students will be selected at the end of the process.
Becks said applications for the program were advertised just like any other year, and she isn't sure why more people decided to apply.
The selection process consists of three rounds. The first, a group interview, began Wednesday.
Students participated in three activities, including one called "Toxic Waste." Students transported a bucket of "toxic" balls across the room with a rope and bungee cord without dropping them.
Becks said the activities allowed candidates to show their communication styles and problem-solving skills.
The second round is an individual interview with a UF faculty member and former Preview staffer, and the third is an individual interview with the staff of New Student Programs. The staff will be chosen in late October, according to the Preview Web site.
Becks said some students apply thinking Preview is all fun and games.
"It's not just all the rah-rah cheerleader stuff," Becks said. "There are very enjoyable things to it, but it is work."
