Alyson McCarthy's cry that minus grades might "make the difference between getting into veterinary school or working at McDonald's" in Tuesday's Alligator may have been a tad overdramatic.
While I do not agree with minus grades, it is important to realize grades will not be the sole determinant of future success. Grades may be a function of work ethic, but other factors - personal ambition, character and the ability to work well with others - speak more about someone than any three-digit number.

Why do you think so many companies, scholarship programs and grad schools conduct interviews with their applicants? It's the same reason college admissions officers are looking at Facebook and MySpace, not just an SAT or ACT score. They want to see the whole diamond, not just one shiny facet.
