Soon UF students will no longer have to endure hours of long lines to get driver's licenses or identification cards.
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles will offer driver's license services at UF from Aug. 11 through Sept. 4.
The department will be able to print tag renewals and handicapped placards as well as driver's licenses and ID cards from a mobile Mini-Flow unit, said Maureen Johnson, the department's chief of field services.
The Mini-Flow unit is a portable shelter used by the department that can be brought into a building and unfolded into temporary counters.
The unit will be located in the UF Bookstore and Welcome Center on the plaza level from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Written tests will be administered for driver's licenses, and individuals can schedule an appointment to take a driving performance test.
People looking to transfer an out-of-state license to a Florida license will be able to do so. Also, people will be able to replace a lost or stolen license.
UF and the department are considering offering the service annually, Johnson said. A similar unit had been set up at Florida State University, and it had a lot of traffic and positive feedback, she said.
UF officials thought people would appreciate the extra convenience of not having to travel for these services, she said.
"We specifically thought of our international and out-of-state students who need local identification," Johnson said.
