Since the Florida College System law went into effect July 1, SFCC is going by its new name, "Santa Fe College."
The bill permits a community college to change its name and use "college" if it has been granted the authority to award bachelor's degrees, according to the Florida Senate Web site.
SFC will offer two bachelor's degrees, clinical laboratory science and health services management, in fall 2009.
SFC has been offering four-year degrees in collaboration with other universities and colleges, including Saint Leo University, for several years, said SFC spokesman Larry Keen.
All of Florida's 28 community colleges now have the option of offering bachelor's degrees.
SFC will go through a "pilot year" along with other colleges during which the state will determine whether the college would benefit from offering four-year degrees, Keen said.
The state Legislature also asked nine community colleges to work on figuring out ways to fund the new education system, said Anne Kress, SFC provost and vice president.
For now, the college will simply change its name on its Web site links, Kress said.
The new domain name will be www.sfcollege.edu.
Aside from online changes, Kress said college officials aren't in a rush to change tangible items like stationery and signs.
"We're going to be very slow on how we're going to implement the actual physical brand change," Keen said.
