Gator dining to offer smaller meal plans for off-campus students

Gator Dining Services will offer two smaller plans this fall for off-campus students who may have had trouble stomaching previous plans designed for dorm-dwellers.

The Commuter Meal Memberships will be available exclusively for students living off campus. The plan is already available for students to purchase for fall.

Student Body Vice President Yooni Yi said the new plans were introduced to meet the needs of off-campus students who might have felt they could not get the most out of the larger plans.

"Off-campus students wanted smaller plans because it was hard to use all of the meals within the semester," Yi said.

Jill Rodriguez, marketing program manager of Gator Dining Services, wrote in a Monday e-mail that the new plans were designed in response to feedback from off-campus students and have been well-received at Preview and transfer orientations this summer.

A 75-meal plan is recommended for students who will eat on campus about four times a week, and the 50-meal plan should satisfy students who will eat on campus two or three times per week, according to the Gator Dining Center Web site.

The 75-meal plan includes $350 in Flex Bucks and costs $918.44 per semester, which amounts to about $7.58 per meal, according to the Web site. The 50-meal plan includes $250 in Flex Bucks and costs $632.50 per semester, which is roughly $7.65 per meal.

Rodriguez wrote that the plan will save students time and convenience.

"There is no need to leave campus and spend money on gas when we offer over 35 dining locations right here on campus," she wrote.

There will also be two new eateries, Moe's and Chili's Too, at the Racquet Club Dining Center this fall.
