A Gainesville man was charged with stabbing and killing a Virginia man with a knife Friday evening in northeast Gainesville.
Bianco Antonio Johnson, 23, is being held at the Alachua County Jail without bond.
The victim, Jason Edward Cooper, 24, later died at Shands AGH. He had been carrying a military ID.
The stabbing occurred around 8 p.m. at the intersection of Northeast 17th Way and Northeast 17th Place, which is just west of Waldo Road.
After the two men got into a verbal fight, Johnson ran into his house on Northeast 17th Way and got a large knife from his kitchen drawer, according to his arrest report. Johnson later said he then ran to the street and stabbed Cooper in the chest with the knife, the report said.
Officers with the Gainesville Police Department's Tactical Impact Unit were called to the scene, and witnesses said the stabbing could have been the result of remarks made about a family member, said Erica Doll of GPD's Public Information Office. Johnson had run off after the stabbing took place, but officers brought him back to the station where he implicated himself in an interview, Doll said.
