A art studio in the Reitz Union has packed up its paints and pottery in preparation for a move to the Reitz Union basement to save money in light of budget cuts.
The Studio, previously located on the ground floor of the Reitz Union, closed May 2 and plans to reopen in the Arts and Crafts Center in the building's basement on June 2.
Beth Waltrip, the Reitz Union's director of student activities, said the shuffle is due to a nearly $2 million cut to the Division of Student Affairs budget.
"If we can move The Studio, that opens floor space for additional retail stores," Waltrip said.
No decisions have been made about The Studio's replacement.
The center will house some events formerly managed by The Studio, such as some leisure courses and Gator Nights activities.
Julie English, program assistant for the Leisure Course Program, said the worst part about relocating is the loss of already scarce foot traffic on the ground floor.
"I've had seniors say they didn't even know we existed," English said.
