Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow is a man with a cause. But it's not a national football championship - at least not this time.
Tebow, along with UF Student Government, the Panhellenic Council and the Intrafraternity Council, will raise money for Florida's homeless and orphans at SG's first large-scale philanthropy, a sorority powder puff football game dubbed "First and 15."
The game will take place on Sunday at Norman Field.
"If we raise $1,000, it's a great success," said Student Body President Ryan Moseley.
"Any money is fantastic. The main point is to raise awareness."
Moseley said Tebow approached him with the idea about a month ago.
Initially, the two considered hosting a date auction, but they decided a powder puff game was the most appropriate way to involve SG, the football team and the rest of the UF community.
"The cause of orphanages has been very dear to my heart," Tebow said.
"I've been working with them since high school."
A draft for sorority players was held Tuesday night at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium's Touchdown Terrace. More than 300 people attended.
Fraternities and sororities raised money by selling T-shirts, holding penny voting in their houses, and paying the cover charge at the draft event.
The money will go to homeless shelters and orphanages throughout Florida, such as the St. Francis House.
Tebow said he feels that the cause has been under the radar.
"We really want to try to create that awareness, and we're going to have a great time doing it," Tebow said. "Hopefully we can make this an annual thing."
