Here's a novel thought.

UF's leading rusher might actually be a running back next season.

Last year was littered with carries by receiver Percy Harvin and Heisman-winning quarterback Tim Tebow, but in Saturday's Orange and Blue spring game, the Gators showcased a brand new weapon.

Chris Rainey, who will be a sophomore in the fall, juked, sprinted and literally ran out of his shoes en route to 140 total yards and two touchdowns in helping lead his Blue squad to a 28-14 win.

With 44 seconds left in the first quarter, Rainey brought in a long pass from Tebow, and then he worked his magic against former Lakeland High teammate Ahmad Black. Rainey started to cut right, but then - just before he got to Black - juked back left and eased into the endzone for the 65-yard score. When asked if anybody was initially covering him on the touchdown, Rainey responded with, "Nope. That was a bad idea."

"(Black) knows what kind of juke I do, so I had to change it up on him," Rainey said. "After the bowl game coach said I needed to get 200 catches every day after practice. So I do that every day."

Even Black had to smile after the game when asked about Rainey.

"It's hard to tackle him in the open field - almost impossible," Black said.

Coach Urban Meyer has gushed all spring about Rainey, and Saturday proved why. After the game, Rainey garnered so much media attention that he was put up at the podium - and not even Tebow got that honor.

"I don't know if Percy-ish is a word, but Chris has got some of that," Meyer said, referring to the speed and athleticism of wide receiver Percy Harvin.

Months ago fans - and maybe even the coaching staff - would've thought Southern Cal transfer Emmanuel Moody would be the star of the day. And while Moody started out the second half with several nifty long runs, he then coughed it up on the 1-yard line when he was about to dive into the end zone.

"He will not play football if there's a chance it's going on the ground," Meyer said.

Linebacker Lorenzo Edwards intercepted a Tebow pass and returned 50 yards for the score.

Receiver Carl Moore and tight end Cornelius Ingram were sidelined with ankle injuries. Wideout Louis Murphy also missed the game with headache issues and quarterback John Brantley missed the game with a right hand injury.

Despite having a 102-degree fever the night before, Tebow played and finished with 200 yards passing, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
