The Discovery Channel's MythBusters show, which scientifically tests the validity of rumors and urban legends, is coming to UF.

Special-effects experts and show hosts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman will perform a multimedia presentation at the O'Connell Center on April 14.

Accent, Student Government's speakers bureau, paid about $40,000 for the event, which is free to the public.Accent Chairman Steven Blank said Accent was prompted to bring the MythBusters hosts after reading suggestions from students surveyed earlier this year.

Blank said the show would be in lecture style and feature unseen footage followed by a question-and-answer session and other surprises.

Some past myths the duo havs dispelled are whether or not it's safe to fill the gas tank of a car while using a cellphone because it could start a fire or if a cigarette falling into a toilet could lead to an explosion.

Blank said the MythBusters also have some "surprise" parts for the show that won't be revealed until that night.

Specific details are still being worked out, Blank said.

Doors open at 7 p.m. for the 8 p.m. non-ticketed show, he said.
