UF's online admissions system struggled to keep up with thousands of high school students who simultaneously logged on Friday with hopes of finding an acceptance notice, leaving some students in the dark on their admissions status long after it was available.
Students could access their letters online at 5 p.m., and the Web site received about 26,000 hits in the first three minutes, UF Provost Janie Fouke wrote in an e-mail.
Steve Orlando, UF spokesman, said high traffic slowed the system, which students continuously checked through Saturday. By about 1 a.m. Saturday - eight hours after students could originally access their letters - the traffic finally slowed, he said.
Nathaniel Amos, a Lincoln High School senior in Tallahassee, said he said he tried to log into at exactly 5 p.m. and for 30 minutes could not access the system.
"I got there at the same time as seemingly every other human being in the state of Florida," Amos said. Although the wait was frustrating, knowing he was accepted was worth it, he said.
