I am a huge proponent of freedom of speech. I believe wholeheartedly that we must allow people to voice their opinion, even when I disagree with it to the greatest extent.
However, something has finally crossed the line of freedom of speech into the gray area of outright disrespect.
Every day I drive north on 34th Street and pass the long stretch of wall that has been painted on for many years. I pass the wall's most notorious panel, the memorial that honors the five students who were murdered by Danny Rolling almost two decades ago. It also used to be the most respected panel, never desecrated with birthday messages or artists' signatures, but this has now changed.
It seems that nowadays someone feels that his or her name is more important than the five students who had their futures stolen from them in such a horrific way.
We must continue the tradition of having respect for the situations that deserve as much. If our generation wants to say anything about our character, we'll do it by not saying it over the memorial on the 34th Street Wall.
