A man was arrested on campus early Friday afternoon after witnesses said they saw him pushing and hitting his fiancee, a UF student, outside the Food Science and Human Nutrition building.
Witnesses saw Talon Deante Jackson, 21, and his fiancee, UF sophomore Kizra Deon Everette, 20, arguing outside Building 120 at around noon, University Police Sgt. Stephen Wilder said.
Wilder added that Jackson is not a UF student, and he did not know why he was on campus.
After arguing for several minutes, Jackson pushed Everette and hit her in the head, Wilder said.
Witnesses then called the police.
UPD officers arrested Jackson and charged him with first-degree battery.
Wilder said Everette insisted that she did not want to press charges against her fiance.
However, police took Jackson to the Alachua County Jail at about 3 p.m.
He remained in jail overnight and was released on Saturday at around 9 a.m., according to jail records.
Everette did not suffer any injuries that needed medical attention, Wilder said.
