This weekend, Gainesville's indie music scene will take a diary tour of the Icelandic landscape through the eyes and ears of Sigur Ros.
The Hippodrome State Theatre will show a special one-time screening of "Heima" at 1 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $5 and seating is limited.
"Heima," meaning "at home," follows Sigur Ros band members as they perform at charity concerts throughout their homeland, Iceland.
The band performed shows in summer 2006 to compile into "Heima." The shows were free and open to the public, and many weren't even announced. The focus of the tour was to give back to the people of Iceland.
"I think it is great that they did something like this," said David Thomas, coordinator of the event. "It made me want to share it with everybody here."
Thomas, 22, is a SFCC student and long-time fan of Sigur Ros. He is part of a do-it-yourself screening program that invites fans from all over the world to hold their own hometown screenings.
Event coordinators are responsible for finding a venue and a local retailer to carry the DVD.
"Sigur Ros is just trying to get people together to see a great film," said Natalie Kuhl, a marketing intern at XL Recordings, the band's label. "That can be in your basement, in a field or anywhere where people can congregate, and that's what the film is aiming for."
The DVD is being sold at Hear Again CDs & DVDs. The store's owner, Andrew Schaer, plays the film often in the store and said he has had a lot of inquires about the luminous figures that belt out the lyrics. Schaer expects a big turn-out at this weekend's show.
"There is just such a demand for this stuff here," Schaer said. "I think people will be impressed."
