Florida ART Film Festival to showcase independent filmmaker work

The second annual Florida ART Film Festival will showcase works by Florida filmmakers this weekend.

Only independent films made by Floridians were accepted into the festival for award consideration, said Sarah Bewley, assistant to the coordinator for the festival.

"It's the only film festival designed to promote Florida filmmakers and Florida as a filmmaking site," Bewley said.

The films submitted were divided into two categories: documentary and narrative. A panel selected two documentary finalists and three narrative finalists.

The documentaries can be seen on Saturday, and the narratives will be shown on Sunday at the Acrosstown Repertory Theatre, 619 South Main Street.

Two judges, one for each category, critiqued the films.

Bewley said she was excited about having outside judges with professional filmmaking experience view the finalists, which was something the festival lacked last year.

Time will be allotted between the screenings for discussion about the films.

The festival kicks off with the east coast premiere of "Ten Inch Hero."

The romantic comedy follows four friends who work at a sandwich shop as they learn about themselves and deal with their love lives.

Bewley said this year's festival grew from last year's thanks to a tourist development grant from Alachua County.

She said she wants the festival to expand to a weeklong event with workshops and a different feature each night.

"We see this as having potential as something that really matters," she said.
