Thanks to the Alligator for publishing its editorial urging students to vote in the election on Tuesday, Jan. 29. The presidential primary and the Gainesville City Commission races will take place along with a third important question: the proposed constitutional amendment affecting property taxes.
If the amendment passes, over the next five years, cities and counties would lose ,9.6 billion, and public schools would lose ,2.8 billion. The amendment would also undercut the Florida Taxation and Budget Reform Commission, which is working on a full review of Florida's tax system.
The amendment is opposed by police, firefighter and teacher organizations. It would only delay the implementation of a rational tax system that would reduce the tax burden on the middle class, while also preserving funds for education and vital state services. Whichever candidates UF students choose to vote for in the primary and commission races, they should definitely vote 'no' on the constitutional amendment.
