Last year's black leggings trend was all the rage among celebrities and college students alike. It was a stylish way to dress down a fancy tunic or look cute with an oversized T-shirt and flip-flops.

But this year, as the old adage says, it's out with the old and in with the new.

It's time for something a little sheerer and a little more sophisticated. It's time to toss out your favorite pair of leggings and slip on a pair of black opaque tights.

This trend is incredibly versatile. You can wear the tights for a night out on the town, to an interview or even just around campus. Here are some ways to slide effortlessly from dressy to business to casual with this year's sexy and sophisticated trend.

For a dressy night look, pair the black opaque tights with a colorful mini dress or curve-hugging frock.

Celebrities like Nicky Hilton choose black platform pumps for footwear, but you could wear T-strap heels, Mary Janes or ankle boots for an equally stylish effect. Make sure to match the shoes to the tights, always in black, to create a seamless transition from leg to foot.

Bring it down a notch for business attire by choosing pieces that are a little less dressy but still sophisticated.

Pair your tights with a high-waisted, black pencil skirt and a crisp, white button-up shirt. If you prefer dresses, take a tip from Katie Holmes, who wore her tights with a chic, knee-length black dress and black patent ankle boots.

For everyday wear, try more casual dresses with your tights, like a cable-knit sweater dress. Take a cue from Rachel Bilson, who wore her tights with black boots, a bubble skirt, tank and jean jacket, for a laid-back, bohemian look. Try flats and boots for casual footwear.

Mind Lindsay Lohan's fashion mishap though, and don't wear these tights as pants.

Unlike leggings, they are see-through, and everyone will be able to see what you're wearing, or not wearing, underneath.

Wear tunics and extra long tanks with the tights only as your bottom as long as they provide sufficient coverage.
