A UF department has proposed increasing motorcycle and scooter decal prices by more than 230 percent starting in the fall.
UF's Transportation and Parking Services is proposing to increase the decal price, which is currently $36 per year, to $121 per year.
UF's Office of the Vice President for Business Affairs and the Board of Trustees have the final say on the proposal, said Ron Fuller, assistant director of Transportation and Parking Services.
The next meeting of the Board of Trustees, UF's highest governing body, is March 14.
"In the grand scheme of things, it's still embarrassingly cheap," Fuller said.
Fuller said four scooters, which "sit around like road mosquitoes," could fit in one car-sized parking spot.
A car decal costs $110 per year.
The proposal also includes a suggestion for approximately 10 percent increases in all decal prices, he said.
He said transportation prices usually increase each year to cover the rising costs of putting up signs, building parking garages and painting parking areas - funds that he said do not come from the state or UF.
The latest count for scooter and motorcycles decals sold to UF students, faculty and staff is more than 3,000, he said.
UF students have mixed reactions to the proposal.
Carrie Brothers, UF history junior, said she'd probably buy a scooter decal even if it costs a "ridiculous price."
Allan Greenfield, UF business administration junior, said if the price of scooter decals increased to more than twice the current amount, he would ride his bike to his classes instead.
Julianne Lago, UF freshman, said it would take a $300 decal price to keep her scooter off campus.
Fuller said he knows many students will be upset if the proposals are approved.
But he said it's nothing new for the department. Not many students are ever satisfied with UF's parking situation on campus.
"We have no happy customers," he said.
