Congratulations, Gainesville Police Department.

While you were busy arresting dozens of underage drinkers, many of-age patrons were driving home drunk.

The police officers parked behind Gator City Wednesday night to arrest underage kids could've been on the streets looking for drunken drivers.

When will you learn that it is drunken drivers that threaten our community and not underage drinking? Lt. Keith Kameg says his department is beefing up underage patrols in the wake of Lt. Corey Dahlem's tragic death last year.

Guess what? Austin Wright wasn't underage. He was of legal age and driving drunk, which is more dangerous than drinking when you're 20.

If anything should be learned from Dahlem's death, it's that we need to crack down on DUIs and not underage drinking.GPD's resources would be better used by setting up DUI checkpoints and cracking down on drunken drivers.

Even the deterrent effect of checkpoints would make the streets infinitely safer.

Getting intoxicated drivers off our streets would benefit everyone in this community much more than arresting some freshman who is drinking a beer.
