I suspect Mr. Machen does not possess a very strong respect for the intellect of the UF student body or faculty.
This endorsement of Mr. McCain is over the line for the president of a public university. He risks the reputation of the university, he risks losing funds for the university, and he risks the politicization of the university.
But Mr. Machen tells us that his endorsement is separate from his position as university president, and therefore, does not put the university community at risk. This is dishonest at best. Who would care enough to solicit his endorsement if he wasn't UF president? If Mr. Machen decides to publicly endorse candidates, then I suppose that comes with the job, but please don't lie to me in the process.
