Displays of colorfully embroidered costumes, flags and orthodox icons transformed the Reitz Union's Arredondo Room in celebration of Bulgaria's one-year membership in the European Union.

More than 150 people gathered Saturday to participate in the Bulgarian Cultural Celebration, including some of Gainesville's Bulgarian community.

Peter Tunkis, UF's Bulgarian Club secretary, began the event with a presentation detailing Bulgaria's interactions with the EU that culminated in the country's membership acceptance on Jan. 1, 2007.

Ushered in by thunderous applause, Elena Poptodorova, Bulgarian ambassador to the United States, spoke on the practical and symbolic benefits of EU membership.

"We want our people to live in a transparent, lawful, human rights-oriented society," Poptodorova said.

She spoke of the system of political checks and balances as a feature that Bulgaria recognizes and is moving toward obtaining.

The negative connotations associated with civil unrest in the Balkans, a region of southeastern Europe, are being replaced with growing feelings of national pride and economic stability, she explained. Bulgaria has also agreed to house three U.S. military bases.

"Our soldiers will train together to meet the challenges of today's world," she said.

UF's Student Government, the UF International Center, the Center for European Studies and Volunteers for International Student Affairs co-sponsored the festivities.

This year also commemorates the 100th year of Bulgarian independence.

The Bulgarian Club, which organized the program, aimed at emphasizing Bulgaria's importance in the international arena and increasing awareness for their country's rich culture.

"I think the event was a great success," said Paoulina Bourova, the club's president. "But for the next event, I think we're going to have to get a bigger room."
