It's getting really old to read complaints about UF's costs and fees while simultaneously reading complaints about a budget deficit and erroneous comparisons of either of those numbers to UF President Bernie Machen's compensation.
How do you expect UF to overcome a budget shortfall without charging more money? Furthermore, I don't know what that "performance bonus" entails, either, but I'm guessing it's his ability to earn massive amounts of fundraising money.
UF is a remarkably efficient public university. Take a quick look at schools that offer a comparable quality of education. You'll notice UF charges half as much in tuition as nearly all of them, in addition to having some of the lowest costs for room and board.
All this on top of the fact that UF is composed of a greater proportion of in-state students who pay less money. This doesn't even take into account that the vast majority of students here don't pay tuition themselves.
At some point, you get what you pay for. In order to offer Florida's top students the best possible education, UF needs more money. Until it comes from tuition increases, it's going to come from other sources: fees and fundraising.
