A very noticeable trend in campus life is the overwhelming presence of students attached to their cell phones or encapsulated by the earbuds of their iPods. Not only does this trend essentially shut us off from the world that is within our gaze, but it nearly destroys any attempts one student may have at communicating with another.
This has devastating effects on campus culture, which is inextricably linked to the communication of ideas outside of our own heads and our own circles of friends. Limiting our use of such devices will prevent us from prematurely closing ourselves off to other people, conversations, perceptions and experiences that might otherwise have a worthwhile effect on us. Let's put our phones in our pockets and set them on silent - something more interesting might be going on.
