In response to "MTV reality show a disgrace to society," society's problem isn't promiscuous sex. "A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila" is cheap, disgusting entertainment - there is no disputing that. But the reason prime-time television is filled with such garbage is because people keep tuning in. Society's real disgraces are the people who tune in to such mindless drivel while the world is bleeding and crying out to be heard.
Soldiers are killed in roadside attacks, civilians are slaughtered in the streets, genocide is ignored, ice caps are melting, minorities are kept in perpetual inequality, health care is a privilege rather than a right, the leader of the free world lies and corporate greed continues to exploit the individual and the world. These facts are ignored.
Society simply tunes it out and tunes in to watch which fatty lost the most weight, the kids who were left alone to rule themselves or whether Tila will end up in some girl-on-girl action. Ignorance is bliss, and so many are willing to embrace it. But what happens to those who stand up, who dare to be heard and whose passion for change runs deep?
They are told they crossed the line, that they broke some social rule. You don't even have to look outside of UF for an example. Students for a Democratic Society was torn apart for giving a minute glimpse into reality. The students apparently "lacked taste."
They weren't applauded for uniting and crying out against a war that was started under false pretenses by a coward hell-bent on being a war president.
Why have the cries of so many been silenced by the latest and crudest reality show? Society is heading in the wrong direction, but it's not because of promiscuity. Rather, it is fueled by ignorance and apathy. People simply can't be bothered.
Maybe I'm being too hard. Maybe people tune into reality television to escape a reality too terrible to face.
Either way, Tila Tequila is sure to stay, while we allow incompetent fools to have the remote control to the world around us. The scariest part of it all? Their favorite genre is horror.
