UF's chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority, known as Zeta, has received punishments from its international headquarters after a Tampa restaurant owner complained about the group's behavior at an October social.
The sorority's social events must be alcohol-free and held in Gainesville for the rest of the academic year, states a news release from Zeta's headquarters.
"It is our desire to send a clear message to the chapter regarding our concern," stated Stacey Verkest Voigt, supervisor of the southeastern U.S. Zeta chapters, in the release.
Caroline O'Connor, manager of the Columbia Restaurant in Tampa, complained in an e-mail that members of the sorority and their dates damaged parts of the restaurant and stole liquor.
Sorority members must complete an alcohol-abuse prevention program and participate in a risk-management seminar.
"The members understand that every activity they undertake in the name of Zeta Tau Alpha reflects on each member individually, the chapter, the Fraternity, the Greek Community, and finally, the University of Florida," Voigt stated.
