In my fourth year as a UF student, I am insulted and ashamed my Activity & Service Fee is helping pay for Alberto Gonzales' legal bills as he faces impending criminal prosecution.
While Gonzales held the highest law-enforcement position in the country, his "accomplishments" highlight corruption in the highest levels of government: complete disregard for international-law standards, secret memos authorizing torture and the harshest interrogation techniques ever used by the CIA, illegal spying on United States citizens, and alleged perjury before Congress.
It is not only a matter of personal opinion that he committed morally offensive acts with no apparent regret. His actions were simply illegal. He is coming here to promote his behavior, and UF is doing the promoting. Free speech is one thing, but this speech is not free - ,40,000 is a lot of money for someone who has absolutely nothing to offer and who has damaged the American image throughout the world.
Besides, anyone interested in Gonzales had ample opportunity to hear him speak during his many testimonies recently before Congress.
