Another year, another Southeastern Conference Championship.
For the 17th consecutive season, the UF volleyball team won the SEC Championship Friday night with a sweep over Tennessee (30-20, 30-18, 30-27).
BI work for a guy who reminds us that these things never get old, and they don?t,C said UF coach Mary Wise, referring to athletics director Jeremy Foley
The win, coupled with an Alabama loss late Thursday night, gave the Gators an unsurpassable lead in the conference with only three matches remaining.
Senior outside hitter Marcie Hampton led the way with 18 kills. She also recorded 16 digs for her 40th career double-double.
BShe was outstanding tonight,C Wise said. BIt was like she went to another gear.C
Senior setter Angie McGinnis also had a double-double - the 29th of her career - with 55 assists and 11 digs.
Freshman Callie Rivers and senior Amber McCray also had double figures in kills.
BThe story of the match was the set distribution, the double-digit kills by three different players - I thought Callie had another great night - [and] the play by Elyse (Cusack),C Wise said.
The match wasn?t even close.
The No. 8 Gators (23-1, 16-1 SEC) led right from the start, as the Volunteers gave them little resistance until game three.
UF finished off Tennessee when the Vols had an attack go out of bounds.
The Gators jumped off the bench and ran to the center of the court, where they celebrated winning the title.
Wise thought it was especially appropriate for the seniors to celebrate in Knoxville considering they lost a match there in their freshmen seasons.
