Wide receiver Jarred Fayson asked for and was granted a release from the UF football team, a UF official confirmed Tuesday afternoon.
The sophomore saw action in 11 of the Gators? 12 games this season at receiver, running back and on special teams.
BIt was just a family decision,C said Carla Powell, Fayson?s mother. BThere really aren?t any issues that I?m aware of. It was just a decision that was discussed among the family.C
Powell said Fayson?s desire to transfer emerged in the past few days, and she and her son visited with UF coach Urban Meyer on Tuesday to discuss his decision.
In addition to Fayson, redshirt freshman tight end Trent Pupello has also been allowed to seek a transfer.
Fayson was rated as the No. 3 receiver in the nation by Scout.com as a senior at Tampa Hillsborough High, but saw little action as a freshman in Gainesville.
This season, he tallied 148 yards and three touchdowns on 12 catches, and 89 rushing yards on 19 carries.
He played his best game against Georgia, when he had a career-high 62 receiving yards. He followed that performance with touchdown grabs in each of the next two games.
Fayson didn?t see action against Florida State last Saturday due to a hamstring injury, Powell said.
He will now seek a new team, but Powell said Fayson could stay at UF through the spring semester. She also said he hasn?t narrowed down a list of possible schools.
BI?m sure that there are some schools that he?s going to want to visit,C Powell said. BHe doesn?t have any particular school in mind, it?s just a matter of sitting down with him and finding out his interests.C
If he transfers to a Division I-A school, Fayson will have to sit out next football season because of NCAA transfer rules. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.
BIt was wonderful to be a part of The Gator Nation,C Powell said. BI?ll continue to watch and support the Gators. It?s been real.C
UF ADDS COMMIT: The Gators didn?t waste much time filling Fayson?s spot on the roster, as they picked up an oral commitment from Jacksonville Forrest High?s Byran Jones.
Jones is a two-way lineman, and the 6-foot-2, 328-pounder is the 13th player to orally commit to the Gators this year.
Oral commitments are non-binding until a letter of intent is signed on or after Feb. 6.
