Before I write what I have to say, I would like to state that I am not racist, sexist, classist or any kind of "ist."
I believe every person should be acknowledged for his or her character and abilities, not because of any other quality.
However, I believe many of the discrimination problems on campus stem from our practices of diversity. I think it's important to celebrate our differences. But the manner in which we do it is not the way to go.
We can't embrace diversity by herding every class of citizen into a group of people just like each other.
How are we supposed to celebrate differences when diversity on campus is promoted by a heterogeneous student body?
Furthermore, how is our method of diversity fair when there isn't a student union, Homecoming celebration and scholarship opportunity for every particular group of people?
We only facilitate "isms" by attempting to promote diversity.
There are scholarships I can't apply for and organizations I can't join because I am not from a specific background or of a certain skin color. How is that fair to me? Is that not also discrimination?
Instead, we need to celebrate diversity by homogenizing our student body. Only then can we truly experience diversity, because we won't be selective to anyone based on anything but character, and that's the way it should be.
