While I can understand why Mr. Duffey - acting president of disgraced Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, which is suspended through 2011 - does not understand the embarrassment Zeta's function brought to our university, I don't see how anyone else can miss it.
His letter overlooked major differences between the Zeta function and the Andrew Meyer incident.
The Meyer incident occurred at a political forum where he was loud, disruptive and obnoxious. The Zeta incident occurred at a top Florida restaurant where the group was destructive. Heckling is common in politics; destruction of property and theft by patrons at restaurants is rare.
While Zeta may have raised ,20,000 for breast cancer, that doesn't free the sorority from its inexcusable breach in decorum. Giving to noble causes does not excuse ignoble acts.
