In a shocking development, one of UF's Greek chapters has done it again. As Ben Franklin once put it, "In this world nothing is certain but death, taxes and UF Greeks getting into trouble."
And like every time it happens, the letters poured in defending the fraternities and sororities. Patrick Duffey's and Jon-Erik Escribano's letters Thursday pointed out that Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority is raising money for breast cancer, so they should be immune to criticism.
While frats and sororities often do good things for society, it does not give members a right to do whatever they wish. Every incident that occurs is another black mark for the Greek community, which overshadows the positive contributions Greek organizations make.
While the Alligator could certainly do a better job of highlighting some of the positive things Greeks do, the Greeks haven't helped their cause by making news for the wrong reasons. But to blame the Alligator for the negative coverage, as Thursday's letters seemed to do, completely misses the point.
If you're not happy about coverage of negative happenings in the Greek community, work to make sure they don't happen. Don't blame a newspaper for reporting them.
