I am writing in response to your article on Booze for Boobs. Although I think the organizers had their hearts in the right place - raising funds for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization - the event title is offensive to those of us who work in the field of breast-cancer care.
Alcohol is a well-known risk factor in the development of breast cancer, and the focus should be on educating women about this very preventable risky behavior.
October is breast-cancer awareness month and the focus should be on education - particularly on the known risk factors and preventative behaviors that individuals can practice to decrease their lifetime risk of developing this disease. Fundraising is a wonderful way to contribute to the ongoing research, but only when it is done in a responsible manner.
