Organized chaos: Gainesville punk scene draws on history and community

Respite Events hosted a concert Wednesday at How Bazar, located at 60 SW 2nd St., aiming to showcase three punk rock bands and a performance from drag artists, “The Boheme Coven.” In downtown Gainesville, where energetic nightclubs and lavish restaurants meet, lies a passion for punk rock not only as a genre, but as a way of life.

When faced with the trials and tribulations of midlife monotony, middle-aged adults find their ways of coping. Some people buy Corvettes. Others may get a new tattoo. But Robb Eggleston took a different approach.

Donning a winged helmet, a lightning-decorated fanny pack and a toy hammer, Eggleston embarks on a weekly run every Thursday — or as he calls it, “Thorsday.”

When Eggleston, 53, took up the mantle of the Norse thunder god, he said he did it to serve his community.

The Gainesville City Commission held a special meeting Thursday addressing the reductions in funding for the Gainesville Regional Transit System proposed by UF during “good-faith talks” between the city and the university.

No official decisions have been made regarding the proposed changes, and UF and the city are “still at the table,” according to a letter from UF sent Thursday.

In our modest four-room office, there is a smooth wooden table where Gainesville Sun publishers from the golden days once sat. It is long and official-looking. It seats eight, but normally there’s 12 chairs tucked in close, shoulder to shoulder, familiar with sweaters and sports bras and T-shirts leaned against their backs rather than suit jackets.
