The already depleted Gators pitching staff suffered another blow on Monday.
Sophomore Johnny Magliozzi announced he would sign with the New York Mets after the Mets selected him in the 17th round in the MLB Draft on June 8, forgoing his final two years of college eligibility.
Magliozzi was Florida’s most consistent pitcher in 2013. He pitched in 29 games – including four starts – and led the pitching staff with a 2.67 ERA. He also led the team in saves and was second on the team in innings pitched, behind only Jonathon Crawford.
Magliozzi was eligible for the draft despite being a sophomore because he met the 21-year-old age limit.
Magliozzi is the fifth Gator to sign with a professional team after this year’s draft, joining Crawford (Detroit Tigers), Daniel Gibson (Arizona Diamondbacks), Cody Dent (Washington Nationals) and Taylor Ratliff (Arizona Diamondbacks).
