Students could have the chance to cap the size of UF Student Senate close to its current amount if senators approve a constitutional amendment proposed Tuesday night.
The amendment would limit the amount of senators elected each semester to between 40 and 50 representatives. There are 47 senators from each term serving to date.
If passed, the amendment will appear on the Student Government spring election ballot Feb. 26. Senators will vote on Tuesday.
Glenda Frederick, Student Senate secretary, said the current range, which is 40 to 60 senators, became effective in 2000 to reflect a growing student body.
Since then, the growth of the university has slowed, Frederick said.
Sen. Mary Grace Bell, who represents District A-01 and is on the committee that proposed the amendment, said the idea is not to limit Senate.
"The U.S. population grows exponentially every year, and Congress still meets demands," Bell said.
