UF students and Gainesville residents can learn about the culture and cuisine of several Arab nations during an event tonight in downtown Gainesville.
Slow Food Gainesville will host Lebanese Culture Night from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. tonight at Half Cork’d, located at 116 SE First St.
April O’Neal, program coordinator for Slow Food, said she is excited about the event.
“We’re hoping that new members of the community would get to know us and those involved with it,” she said.
“One purpose of the event is to introduce the Gainesville community to the culture of the Arab states and also to introduce them to the cuisine of the Arab states,” said Anita Anantharam, an assistant professor for UF’s Center for Women's Studies and Gender Research.
Anantharam, who assisted in organizing the event, said the idea for the Lebanese-themed night came from her ties to the university, adding two students, both of Lebanese descent, approached Anantharam about organizing the event.
“We really support the ideas that come from the community,” she said.
The event will feature appetizers, belly dancing and a PowerPoint presentation with history and cultures of different Middle Eastern countries.
Tickets will be $10 for students and $20 for the public.
