A 33-year-old Gainesville man landed behind bars Sunday afternoon after he stole a $15 pair of headphones from the Butler Plaza Wal-Mart and resisted arrest, police said.

Gainesville Police officers arrested Lamont Xavier Ferguson on charges of robbery and petit theft, according to a GPD arrest report.

At about 10:45 a.m., a Butler Plaza Wal-Mart loss prevention officer saw Ferguson take a pair of Sony headphones, hide them in his pants and walk out of the store, according to the report.

The store officer tried to stop Ferguson, but Ferguson fought back to the point where a bystander had to help hold him down until GPD officers arrived. During the fight, one official was injured.

Officers later arrested Ferguson.

However, they were not able to find the headphones.

During questioning, Ferguson told police he took the earbuds off the shelf to look at them and put them back, according to the report. He added that he was slammed against a wall by the loss prevention staff on his way out.

Officers booked Ferguson into the Alachua County Jail at about 1 p.m. Sunday. He remained in jail Monday in lieu of no bond.
