(Andrew Stanfill / Alligator Staff) A Gainesville Police officer directs traffic at the scene of a hit and run after a truck hit a pedestrian on West University Avenue at the corner of Northwest 12th Street early Thursday morning.

The Gainesville Police Department is trying to identify the driver of a dark-colored pickup truck involved in a hit-and-run early Thursday morning.

The driver, described as a young white male with wavy blond hair, hit a pedestrian traveling west to east on West University Avenue at the corner of Northwest 12th Street around 12:22 a.m., according to Ofc. Ryan McCazzio.

Police said the driver first bumped the individual with his car and exchanged words with the victim. Then the driver possibly accelerated his vehicle and then ran over the individual crossing the intersection.

According to witnesses, the truck was dark blue or gray with chrome on the front bumper and had a full bed cover.

The victim was taken to Shands at UF and is believed to be a UF student. Police said the victim had non life-threatening injuries, including a few abrasions. GPD received an update at 1:30 a.m. that the victim was conscious and walking and talking at Shands.
