Attack on local delivery driver raises safety awareness

After the recent attack on a local pizza delivery driver in Northwest Gainesville, safety at Granada Apartments has become a greater concern.

Kelly Scott, a manager at Granada Apartments, said the complex has lights all over the property, and she and another manager patrol the area regularly.

“We have put people out and asked them to leave because of things they are doing that we believe may cause an issue,” Scott said. “If we see problems, we try and nip it in the bud right then and there.”

Scott said during her five years on the property, nothing like this has ever happened. She said she believes this is an isolated incident but has asked for extra police patrol and surveillance.

In response to the attack, the owner of the Five Star Pizza on Southwest Second Avenue made the decision to stop deliveries to Granada Apartments, said Travis Peterson, a manager at the restaurant.

He also stressed that drivers don’t carry very much money on them during deliveries.

“Anybody that’s thinking about robbing a delivery driver doesn’t realize how pointless it is,” Peterson said. “For just a little bit of money, you’re putting someone’s life at risk.”

Peterson said his advice for delivery drivers who may find themselves in similar situations is to trust their instincts.

“If something’s telling you that something’s wrong, don’t second chance it,” he said. “You only have one life.”
