Petition against Scott-signed diplomas gaining steam

A campaign to remove Gov. Rick Scott's signature from Florida university diplomas is still going strong.

The online petition, started by UF alumnus Eric Sanders on Nov. 8, now sports more than 400 signatures.

Slow to catch on in its first week, the petition is starting to attract the attention of media outlets around the state, including the St. Petersburg Times' education blog and StateImpact Florida, a reporting project of National Public Radio.

The attention from the press, as well as the petition's growing support on Facebook, might explain the jump of 100 signatures in less than a week.

Karen Kamener was the 407th person to sign the petition on SignOn.org, a site run by MoveOn.org.

In the comment accompanying her signature, she wrote that she homeschooled her two younger children after seeing the "negative effects" of Florida's education system on her oldest child.

"It is a criminal act to lessen [Florida schools'] quality any further, and it is really sad to see what this state has become under the current governor who behaves like a corporate criminal," she wrote on Nov. 25.
