The Union Street Farmers' Market is about more than fresh, local food. It's about people.

Although fast-food and microwaveable meals are the primary choice among college students, many others take an advantage of the fresh selections of farm produce offered at the Union Street Farmers' Market. Located in the Gainesville Downtown Community Plaza, it's open every Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

"We are here 52 weeks out of the year, we don't close down for anything and the produce is good," said Jerry Bruner, market manager.

The Farmers' Market offers everything from coffee selections from around the world, to dairy produced in local farms, to hand-made jewelry. Vendors and customers alike see the market as a venue to exchange ideas as much as a place to sell their goods.

Julie Barden, a coffee vendor, said the best part of the Farmers' Market is the personal experience it offers its customers.

Sarah Evans, a Gainesville resident, said she attends the market regularly because is close to her house and she can find a wide variety at low prices.

"There's organic foods at good prices. It's a neat cultural niche," Evans said.
