Boy meets girl: the "boyfriend" trend

I've always been jealous at how effortlessly my boyfriend can just roll out of bed, riffle through a pile of questionably clean clothes on the floor, and pull together a simple, yet stylish, ensemble in a matter of minutes.

Luckily for me, that effortless style has inspired many womenswear designers. Their chic translation of menswear means we too can effortlessly throw on a sexy, comfy outfit, even if it doesn't come from a pile on the floor.

I know what you're thinking, "I can't pull off that trend." By mixing and matching the right pieces-and adding the right accessories-you too, can pull together a chic and current look.

Here are some tricks to pull off the latest menswear inspired fashions:

The boyfriend cardigan

My favorite part about the boyfriend cardigan is that it is versatile and portable. Throw it in your tote to keep yourself warm in the icy lecture halls.

You can also throw it on over a summer dress and belt it to instantly update your summer look. Try wearing the cardigan as a dress. Throw on a belt and a great pair of boots and you have the perfect outfit for a night downtown.

The boyfriend blazer

My absolute favorite way to wear the boyfriend blazer is on top of a vibrant summery dress. Try looking at local thrift stores or stealing one out of your boyfriend's closet. A boxiness of a boyfriend blazer can dress down a feminine, fancier look.

The boyfriend jean

The boyfriend jean is a comfortable, casual and exceptionally trendy look. I'll be honest, the boyfriend jean-like most trends-isn't for everyone. It looks best on women who have no hips and are rectangular shaped. The bagginess of the jeans accentuates the hips and adds volume to a rectangular-shaped body.

The boyfriend jean lies in the shoes. Roll up your jeans and put on your most fabulous pair of shoes for a chance to really show them off. Celebrities like Rachel Bilson and Jessica Alba make casual look chic in their boyfriend jeans.

The boyfriend trend is all about balance. If you're wearing boyfriend jeans, opt for a fitted, feminine, flirty top. Try a frilly summer dress under your blazer or cardigan. The idea of the boyfriend trend is to be inspired by menswear, not look like a man.

So, before going out and spending any money or committing to a trend, try raiding your boyfriend's closet first. No boyfriend? No problem. Borrow a piece or two from your brother or your roommate. This is a trend that every girl can be inspired by without overindulging.
